Week 1 June 16-20 Health and Fitness Camp Come cook, hike, move, explore and learn how much fun a healthy lifestyle can be! Explore the outdoors while we search for more than 15 varieties of wildflowers found on and around our campus. Learn how to prepare healthy meals and keep our bodies moving while learning techniques to develop lifelong personal fitness habits. Steve Maas, instructor
Week 2 June 23-27 (8:30 - 3:30) HIT THE TRAILS - Introduction Join us for a week of trail riding ranging from 8 to 29 miles a day. Adult support is available to accommodate a variety of ability levels -- beginner to expert. Trails include the TART Trail, Leelanau Trail, Betsie River Pathway and Lost Lake Pathway. Time is spent each day learning basic bike safety and maintenance. Parents are welcome to come along. A mid-day lunch break is included. Steve Maas, instructor
Week 3A June 30-July 3 HIT THE TRAILS - Continuation Trail rides move to more intermediate trails such as the Lake Ann Trail, Sand Lakes Quiet Area and the VASA Trail. Participants should be comfortable riding in the dirt (hopefully not too much sand). Parents are welcome to come along and enjoy the riding with their children. A mid-day lunch break is included. Week 3B June 30-July 3 THE WORLD OF MAMMALS As we learn more about the defining characteristics of mammals, we will explore our outdoor environment to discover their habits. Using found materials, we will create some of our own. This class combines hands-on natural science activities with artistic creations. Jen Harris, instructor
Week 4 July 7-11 MASKS AND SIMPLE COSTUMES Come join the fun! Bring a cardboard box and a paper bag to help create masks and costumes for you, a friend, or a whole group of people. Learn the history of culture and experience lots of hands-on gluing, pasting, painting and bedazzling. Please wear art work clothes and join the party. Marcia Borell and Steve Maas, instructors
Week 5 July 14-18 BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY Learn to use a digital camera, take great digital photos, participate in a photo-shooting field trip and prepare your best photo for printing on a large format printer (up to 24" x 40"). Each student should have a digital camera- minimum 3 mega-pixel. (Cameras are available to participants who do not have one). Material fee: $20. Reed Zitting, Rachel Roberts, instructors
Week 6 July 21-25 (8:30-11:30 Mon. & Tues., overnight camping Wed. & Thurs.) WILDERNESS WEEK Join us for a week in the great outdoors! We will learn about the native plant species of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and then head into the wild for two nights in a rustic campsite near the shores of Lake Michigan to put our discoveries to the test! (Camping fee required; parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.) Rachel Roberts, instructor
Week 7 July 28 - Aug 1 DRUM CAMP Come experience an interactive week-long workshop where you can learn to play drums and percussions, make an instrument, and learn performance techniques. Travel the world through rhythms, rhymes, songs and story telling. The stories come alive with interactive music, costumes and acting. Dede Alderman, Rachel Roberts, instructors
Week 8 & 9 Aug 4-8; Aug 11-15 (Sign up for 1 or both weeks) GOURMET GARDENING Spend one or two weeks enjoying, harvesting and cooking with vegetables and herbs straight from the gardens of The Children's House. This class combines gardening with cooking to help children not only learn the art and science of growing but also the importance of fresh food as a healthy alternative to packaged and fast foods. Children will work in production gardens and in the kitchen and learn basic food preparation skills. Bring your appetites! Rachel Roberts, Cymbre Foster, instructors
Week 8 & 9 Aug. 4 -15 BEGINNING THEATER (For children who have finished 3rd-6th grade) Students participate in a variety of fun theater games and improvisations ending in a public performance. Activities include machines, directed improvisations and various games. No prior experience needed. Reed Zitting, instructor
