Alumni Newsletter 2022-23

The Children's House and Compass Montessori Junior High

the_childrens_house_montessori_school_in_traverse_city_michigan_1.jpgAs Michele Shane, Head of School, always says at the Dance of the Cosmos, “Even if this is your final year at our school, you are always part of our community.” The launch of this newsletter is one way we are committing to this statement. It is our invitation to you to stay connected and to give you a peek into what is happening now that you are no longer receiving our weekly Waypoints (formerly known as the Compass, which was formerly known as the Tuesday Note!).

Our faculty regularly contribute to our blog, we post photos and happenings on social media, our volunteer opportunities and special events help to support and build our community, and classroom highlights are a snapshot of daily life for our current learners. This newsletter will hopefully transport you back to your days in our hallways and remind you of the friendships, values, and outlook on life and learning that are nurtured here through the Montessori philosophy.

Sincerely,
Renee Hintz (Isaac 2008-16 and Anika 2011-23)
Director of Advancement

Roots & Wings Gala

Letter to our community from Brittany Luea, TCH Parent and Gala Chair

Do you remember the moment you first stepped into The Children’s House? I do. I was greeted by the timber framed entry that led me into a naturally lit waiting area complete with child size benches. As an architect, I always notice the aesthetic and functionality of the built world. Clearly, this school had thought of every detail and had created a learning environment that was truly child centered. I remember thinking, “if the school is this thoughtful with their built environment, I can only imagine the level of care they take with the children.” Continue reading ...

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging at the Children's House

By Michele Shane

Dr. Maria Montessori believed in the value and worth of every child from the beginning of developing her pedagogical model for education. In Montessori schools, community is based on the assumption that every human being has value, gifts, and contributions to make. Classrooms are carefully prepared to promote inclusion, collaboration, valuing the perspective of others, and fostering a strong sense of self-worth.

Megan's Primary Southeast 1/25/23

On Friday afternoon, we were invited to a performance by cellist and vocalist, Jordan Hamilton. He introduced us to the acoustic and electric cello by playing a variety of current and original songs. The children were asked to notice the instruments’ differences, clap along to a rhythm and even help him sing parts of a song. Jordan played a combination of classical, folk, R&B and hip hop music before ending with a Q & A session. It was a great opportunity for us to practice being in an audience and learn about the path of becoming a professional musician!
